And Helicopters On The Frontpage Of The Newspaper. There's A War Going On And I'm Marching In Heavy Boots.

Au diable la gentillesse et les caresses, ici ça bastonne, c'est crasseux, nihiliste, "AND THE ONLY WAY FOR US TO BE HAPPY AGAIN IS FOR THE WORLD TO END" !

__________

Il y a déjà 12 ans, bien avant que Suis La Lune n'émerge, un groupe local, The Hope And The Failure, sortait son seul et unique disque, The Lights Are On But This Dance Never Ends, situé quelque part entre Envy et Mihai Edrisch.

English version :

For the common of mortals, Sweden is the country of Gustav, this guy who only swears by Krisprolls. It’s also the land of snow, death metal, blond people, ABBA and Volvo. But for us emokids, Sweden is primarily the country of origin of one of the most important bands of the post-hardcore scene: Refused, this band who having an aura beyond the spheres of hardcore, like Fugazi. It’s also the homeland of Suis La Lune, one of the very best screamo bands of their time. These extremely influential groups seems to have caused the birth of a screamo scene not only fraternal and devoted, but more and more solid and creative since at least ten years, where each band participating in it seems to have a common denominator: innate sense of melody.

Indeed, the Swedish bands know for now do better than everyone that magical mix of ucompromising virulence and ultra-powerful and ethereal melodies. The Suis La Lune heritage... The example is obvious with Via Fondo. The first full-length of the band, Efter, Utan Under, has left everyone speechless. The perfect balance between lightness and chaos, between melancholy and quiet, these avalanches of  ironically melodious riffs, as sharp as touching, taking pleasure in stretching, to better explode. It sounds like all your favorite bands. I think Via Fondo is the most appropriate band to illustrate this "swedish touch" that seems to conquer the scene, little by little.

In the same category, Shirokuma is also very representative of this scene. On their debut album, Sun Won't Set, the quartet continually keeps a melodic momentum. Their music is constantly on the razor's edge, relatively aggressive, but there’s no dark passage, no heaviness, it's really something light, something that may seem although paradoxical, but it’s present, and serves more than one might think the vocal howls, the frantic rhythmic assaults precisely forming a special balance. This is simply the art of making an atmospheric screamo without post-rock. And hey, the artwork of the disc is awesome.

Behind them some other formations plays this kind of… Lunar screamo ? I think of Vi som älskade varandra så mycket. and their first album who came out in October 2014, this absolute gem called Den sorgligaste musiken i världen in the complete anonymity, but god, how beautiful is it. More post-rock perhaps, but still extremely intense and cathartic. One of these records, as rare and valuable as the snow who it’s customary to see falling on Swedish soil. That kind of stories as beautiful and ephemeral than her... OK well, I digress a little, but it’s for staying in the theme of the music of this group. It's dreamy, sensitive, realistic, melancholic, romantic. It's sorrows and tears yelled headlong. It is sung in Swedish, but the band has taken care to provide the English translation of all the texts on their Bandcamp page. The Swedish language has this raw side, cold, cutting, which particularly suits this kind of relatively marginal and complex music...

There are also those who use crystal and snowy melodies to integrate them into something more experimental, more progressive (think about what La Dispute done before Wildlife and what he would have done if he had eaten Saetia along the way to get an idea how it may sound). This is the case of Careless, which has also just released his first album, I Wish You Away. It goes a bit in all directions, it’s sometimes hard to define, but that wealth makes us want to hold on to this album, to understand the subtleties and finally to get carried away. Here too, a fine example of the ingenuity of Swedish emokids.

So, in the experimentations, a local band went relatively far, I named the very obscure and discrete band Suffocate For Fuck Sake, which he had embarked on the idea of writing long breakaways to place somewhere between ambient music, samples, post-rock and a very dark screamo. It was amazing, and it still amazing, but this band is dissolved since some years. His aura still shines very strong, as well as the force that remains in this album with an endless title: Blazing Fires And Helicopters On The Frontpage Of The Newspaper. There's A War Going On And I'm Marching In Heavy Boots. A very mysterious record to enjoy the evening in the dark, alone.

You still want darkness? Well, no problem buddy, here's for you No Omega. Go to hell, kindness and caresses, here it knocks, it's filthy, nihilistic, "AND THE ONLY WAY FOR US TO BE HAPPY AGAIN IS FOR THE WORLD TO END!" Well, I calm down and I will explain better. No Omega is the darkest screamo-influenced entity of Sweden, sometimes flirting with black metal and sludge. It's not for nothing that Throatruiner Records distributes their records in Europe! The dudes ride their bump since 2010, they have already released two albums that oozes despair, anger and mud, and they are preparing a new EP, Occupants, for April 2014 ... Who looks more melodic. But not as bright as their counterparts, the trap is carefully avoided! It will evoke you Killing The Dream, and even Capsize... It sounds more neat, more airy, and it may divide their audience... Stay tuned.

Back to our saving melodies, do you want? Because there is a band that I definitely want to talk to you: Rainmaker. Musically, it's always the balance chaos/melo. But otherwise, their stuff is to denounce what's wrong, and not just what's wrong in their heart. They claim the right to the sensitivity, the right to be as we are and as we want to be, among others. Another feature is their singer, Vivien, is a French expatriate. And he doesn’t hesitate to use his native language to express his anger and feelings, through sincere and direct words. He takes the time to explain the message of the songs of the band when the guys are in concert, and apart from that, it's a good guy, intelligent, is clear about what is happening in society and within the punk scene, you could spend hours debating with this guy. I can’t wait to see them live again, and discover their next piece that will appear on a split with the great italian band ØJNE. I already heard this song live, and It sounds epic .

There are also those who do something a little too neat with the Nordic screamo. Not bad, far from it. But a little too smooth or too sophisticated. I think of Disembarked and Young Mountain. The first one released two EP that I found absolutely great, before presenting an album, Nothing's Wrong Here, where the music runs out of stream, leaving a little too much expressing the cheesy side of the melodies, ruining the urgency of the beginning. We can found her only in "Hindsight"...
The second one has just released his second EP, We're Drowning In Slowmotion. Musically, I find these contrasts and this intensity that I love so much (those screams!). It's just that the very clean production tend to surprise. But it gives an impressive force to the whole thing. So it's not a bad thing for me, in the end. This EP will be for them a great basis for the future, the latter being already a great record!

There are already 12 years old, long before Suis La Lune emerges, a local band, The Hope And The Failure, released their one and only album, The Lights Are On But This Dance Never Ends, somewhere between Envy and Mihai Edrisch. A record that I highly recommend (you can find it in very good quality on Soulseek) with a very strong emotional power, yelled by a female voice that you can hear often in tears, which for me is a multiplier of sensitivity and sincerity. And the singer of this formation passed far too unnoticed, Ina, now plays in Heart On My Sleeve. In itself, it contains the foundations of The Hope And The Failure, but the compositions are less violent, and the group evolves, the more they stretch, sometimes ogling downright to the melodic hardcore. Listen and enjoy it, otherwise you will miss your life.

Finally, it was necessary that I reserve you a GREAT ending. And she will be called Ephemera. I have already spoken of this supergroup in my blog, you can read all you need to know about them here. But because we speak about swedish stuff here, I have to say again some words about this great band created by the guitarist of Heart On My Sleeve, Gabriel Bergman Lavobary. The time of a 3-track EP, it brings together members from most of the Swedish screamo bands, and of course, it gives quite extraordinary pieces in the direct line of all what you can listen above. This is huge, simply.
