OSTRACA - LAST

-

To start, I'll obviously begin by one of the records of the year on the screamo scene. A band that I didn't liked immediately, I took me time to fully appreciate their sound, and it gave me huge slaps in the end. Last is probably one of the strongest, ambitious, anxiety-driven records of the last years in their category, in this whole movement that believes hard that Neil Perry was right in their choice to mix screamo and metal(-core). The band continues to play very dark music, desperate, sometimes chaotic and violent through the metalcore influences that punctuate the whole thing, but is less rough and "harlequin" than Deathless, there is more consistency in everything, we don't get lost anymore. The opening title "Waiting For The Crash" is a shocking discharge of despair, talking explicitely about suicide, of those dark ideas that sometimes come to mind, those we don't want to explain to anyone : it says that sometimes we just want to disappear without hurting anyone, and that's true for lots of people, that's true for me. And I don't know if it's flattering for the band (for me it is), but seriously, these first seconds sounds like fucking Deftones?? Everything is quite exceptional on this disc, be it the ball of anxiety that seems to be "The Orchard", the musically very rich "Childlike", the dronegaze-ish ambiances almost stolen from This Will Destroy You that we can hear on the wonderful tracks " Nausea "and" Worn Away "... It's a record that takes guts, turns them over, suggests us fatalistic songs, that put us in front of reality and its hardness (I refer you in particular to the words of "Confronting Imagism") ... We don't come out unscathed from Last, and that's good in my opinion. A new friend and usual reader of the blog will understand, that was a special hello.

-

I think you had a guess that I was going to write on this record sometime this year, right? Well yes, because he's sooooo damn cool, because he's important for me and I that I'll don't hide facts : Chaviré is the band that has definitely awakened a political conscience that I hid deep in my heart not to shock people around me (you know, those who say antifascism is terrorism, feminism is nazism, and refugees are stealing our jobs, and fortunately I don't have them anymore on my friendlist), as much with their lyrics as through the conversations I had with each of them. And it's some music that touch me, that makes me wanna live, that evokes all that I see and don't wanna see anymore around me, and who concretely proposes why bad stuff is there, and how to change all that. We can hear a lot of Daïtro's Y influences, we still hear a lot of Belle Epoque like in their demo and I thank them for that (Belle Epoque was my very local band when they were active), these backing vocals that sound like the "Stonehenge Records style" emo (the one that nobody called "screamo" back in the day), there is surely a little of their "non-emo" punk culture that I discover today with their Facebook posts or something, the entire record is much more melodic that what we knew of them so far, perhaps even more inspired by hardcore punk and indie punk than screamo, less raw on the form but still virulent on the bottom. This record is mainly inspired by the boredom of the metropolises, the imprisonment that constitute the gray walls of these gentrified neighborhoods, the paving stones that we throw and which don't even belong to us anymore, these trips which are no longer useful than to feed more Facebook photo albums than to see landscapes. I found there the fire, the subversion, all these various references, which made me love the band at first listening, but in better, from a strictly musical point of view. They already know a lot of things, even though I'm definitely better at writing, so I'm not going too far into what I think of this album at the risk that this passage becomes encyclopedic. But yeah, if a soundtrack were needed to the angriest part of the class war, Interstices would be a very good one. This is an emo version of all the rage and boredom expressed on Snapchat or permanently by the kids of cities who are given no platform to express themselves, it's the "why" of these people dressed all in black, in the scene or in the streets, that's why the emo is not that selfish, not that machist shit we tend to discover before everything else. Stonehenge Records has released this record, and this choice makes perfect sense for me. Congrats and thank you.

FRAIL HANDS - S/T

CE. DISQUE.

-

THIS. RECORD. SLAYS. There are no other words. It's absolutely everything I like about screamo-influenced math rock. Frail Hands came out of nowhere and dropped a beast of an album, which is a perfect alchemy between Lord Snow, Mahria, and the Dark Mountain-era Loma Prieta. It hits fast and strong, there's a lot of catchy melodies delivered with a sustained cadence, there's a deadly good groove, it holds our breath to the end. Go listen to them right now if you like screamo but if you like it even more when it surprises you all the time.

SEEYOUSPACECOWBOY - FASHION STATEMENTS OF THE SOCIALLY AWARE

-

If you hang out on the screamo internets, you probably know that a revival of "sasscore" is in progress. You know, that musical genre filled with chaos and eccentricity that bands like DaughtersThe Blood BrothersThe Plot To Blow Up The Eiffel Tower or An Albatross? Still doesn't speak to you? So here's something to discover all this with this link. In 2017, a group perfectly embodies this revival: SeeYouSpaceCowboy. We find the madness, the intensity, the originality of "sasscore", with some more recent elements, and heavy-ass breakdowns. Ah, and the singer is also the one in Flower Taped To Pens and René Descartes, makes superb artworks and holds the label Structures // Agony. "Pep Talk From A Nihilist" is probably one of my favorite songs this year...

And when I'm finishing this article, the band has just released a new single, "Atrocities From A Story Book Perspective", 1m30 of white-belt mosh.

-

The Marée Noire demo is simply my favorite demo of the year, without any discussion. It's an ULTRA-BANGER. I discovered the tape thanks to a friend on Facebook who shared it, I knew nothing about them, I listened, I repeated the thing dozens of times since and it will never stop. Devastating and angry as fuck D-beat that sounds just like a civil war. it's with Fabrice Syndrome 81 / Trashington D.C at vocals and Nicolas Nicolas Amanda Woodward / Exhaustion and a bunch of other bands on guitars, and yeah, it's damn COOL.

-

BLEAKNESS - RUINED TAPE

-

And Nicolas Marée Noire seems to want to do a lot of music this year, because you can also find him in Bleakness, a project that was actually created a few years ago, but whose first record finally comes out at the end of this year: Ruined Tape is 4 tracks of sad, gray, tense hardcore punk, with strong post-punk connotations, an ideal thing to accompany a bus ride to go to work. When it's raining, of course. And behind these bass lines, beautiful like a downpour, you'll find Phab Chaviré...

YOTSUYA KAIDAN - TOO SAD TO TELL YOU

"it's stupid to smash against the rocks while jumping over the puddles, in the place where the waves once used to grind the rocks, (faces on our shows, I recall all of you)"

-

The East-European screamo scene have something more than bands of the other parts of the continent, while being strongly influenced by early french scene. They have that social context that gives to the local bands a little more reason and legitimacy to be, in my opinion... And Yotsuya Kaidan don't deviate from the rule. So far, authors of a half melancholic / half chaotic catharsis, the Ukrainian band have decided to vary their music a little on Too Sad To Tell You, an EP co-produced by A Fond D'Cale Prod and Dog Knights Productions. It's a bit more melodic, the vocals remain the same, there's always some chaos in their compositions, then we take even more pleasure to listen to them, and to depress on their record...

SHAKERS - S/T

-

I received this record as a gift with an order placed with I.Corrupt Records. The cover was badly printed, but I didn't care, it will be a collector item in the future haha! Shakers are from Germany, and they released this year a 7" EP which was in fact recorded at the end of 2015. It's a classic kind of screamo, but very catchy, with some melodic hardcore inspirations. I saw them live at the end of the year, they have nice new songs, better than those present on the 7 ", with a little swedish touch that I have always liked a lot ... I look forward to listen! And what's more, they are nice people ...

SUGARTOWN CABARET - S/T

-

Without really letting us expect anything since a long time, Sugartown Cabaret finally released this year what turns out to be their last album ever. I was very sad when I learned it, I would've liked to see them again, knowing that I'm losing memories of the only time I saw them... They took their time to compose that eponymous album, it wasn't always easy to do from what I know, but the result is there: a subtle evolution, natural, but a sound always recognizable, very personal. With this excellent record, a little more direct than the previous ones, a little more "psychedelic" too, they will still remain for a long time one of the best bands of their style in France, inventive, intriguing, skillfully distant from postures and labels. Hey, when Marc Euvrie is in the line-up, it still surprising?

D'AUTRES TRUCS COOL / OTHERS BANGERS :

Cloakroom - Time Well  /  Un parfait dosage entre country/blues, stoner, emo et shoegaze.

In this record, guys in Cloakroom simply perfected their country / blues, stoner, emo and shoegaze alchemy. An unlikely mix on paper but very successful in the end. It's like This Will Destroy You playing True Widow tunes. One of my favorite records this year... He deserves a lot more words than these few lines, I hate myself.

What we have lost with Hérésie, Marée Noire have resurrect it. It's deeply melancholic, airy screamo, but with dark, rough riffs, which sometimes even made me think of what I liked in the 2010-2012 UK melodic hardcore. A very nice EP.

LOL.

It's simple: if you liked the french Marée Noire, you'll fall in love with this. It goes straight on the line of banger demo released on the local d-beat / hardcore scene this year, it's a complete and well-executed swedish D-beat worship, it's as powerful and corrosive as a vitriolic shower on the face of society, and yeah, that's a killer tape. LOL.

Overall the same thing as the text above, but with a slightly more catchy sound with phaser on bass and reverb all over the vocals. It's always a banger and US punx can easily be jealous of not having this band as a local one.

A very underground screamo gem, with a big jazz influence, some chaotic breaks, and obviously these eternal heart-wrenching melodies. And with a special little word for the American internets of the emo scene in the tracklist, that little necessity that pleases in a period where the words addressed to other people are always too sharp (some will say "too edgy") in these circles, and even oppressive.

And So I Watch You From Afar.

It took me a long time to understand the hype around this band in France, in fact it was mostly the fact that I didn't want to listen to another cringey pop-rock "sensation" from fucking Rock-en-Seine festival and sponsored by Ricard and the SNCF, then I remembered that Throw Me Off The Bridge has also gone through a Ricard contest and didn't became a horrible FM pop-folk artist like Ed Sheeran or something. But in fact, it's like Ropoporose: I think they accidentally sound like emo and noise rock bands (or maybe because they play At The Drive-In and Sonic Youth riffs better than others), and it's fabulous. A magnificent discovery. They remind me a lot of The Dispute and Hot Cross at vocals, it's musically very rich, it sounds like an emo version of And So I Watch You From Afar. I like more and more each time I listen. It's beautiful. And hey, they 100% don't give a fuck about all the capitalist brands that give them a stupid ass fake attention, they play big stages for beautiful people and that's all that matters for them.

Well, because I'm talking about it just before, l have to develop why this second Ropoporose album is so cool. It's a dozen tracks all in softness and energy, a warm and lively math-rock, honed by generous guitars, just a little noisy as it needs to be. The sacrosanct Japanese math-pop scene finally seems to have found some competition with this duo.

It was necessary that a Swedish group figure in my crushes of the year. Trachimbrod has released this year a highly anticipated LP, named Leda, and was clearly worth the wait... A very nice album of what we can probably call pop-screamo (still not a phase, 100% supporting it but PLEASE DON'T THINK OF ANY SCENE RECORD PLEASE THANK YOU), with verse-chorus-verses, catchy and sugar-ish melodies, a cathartic and relaxing blend. The guitars are always fed with shoegaze, which allows to put forward the warm feelings that prevails on this album. If you like Swedish screamo, you absolutely have to listen to this record, and just get carried away.

Bisous.
